The VERXA W bridge-type machine will enable the Engine Factory to have the latest machine tool technologies in Cartagena.
Spanish ship building company Navantia chooses a Correa milling machine for the manufacturing of engine blocks. As one of the most technologically advanced milling machines installed in Spain in the last decade, the Correa VERXA W bridge-type machine will enable large parts over 8 metres long and 3 metres wide to be machined with micron precision.
This 22-metre-long installation is equipped with the latest machine tool technologies, as well as a robotised tool change system and seven interchangeable heads for highly complex machining operations, while maintaining a high level of flexibility and chip removal.
The VERXA W is the second Correa machine acquired by Navantia in the last months; it will be installed in Cartagena for machining of parts for the new frigates of the Spanish Army. At the end of 2020, a NORMA fixed bed Correa milling machine was installed in the same Cartagena Engine Factory.
This commitment to the latest technology on the world market goes hand in hand with a transformation and digitalisation of all the factory´s work processes and business management with the application of virtual and augmented reality models, as well as a modernisation and renovation of the facilities of both the workshop and the offices.
From the Engine Factory, Alberto García Garnica, head of Manufacturing Processes within the Production Engineering and Engine Business Planning department, stated that "after the experience we had had with Correa Group and after getting to know their facilities and potential, we had no doubts about their ability to meet our needs and those of our customer. We are eager to start working on the project, which is sure to be exciting and full of new challenges".
For his part, Correa Group´s Applications Engineering Director, Javier García, said that "the Nicolás Correa Group is proud to work with Navantia on a project as important as the manufacture of the new F-110 frigates. We have been working for months to offer Navantia a machining solution that incorporates the most advanced systems in terms of automation, productivity and digitalisation. This new facility will provide Navantia with a strategic capacity to machine all the engine blocks of the present and the future".
